What’s there to believe?
July 27th, 2008

(Don’t read this if you haven’t seen the movie and don’t wanna know anything in the plot…)
As advertised, I went to see the much anticipated new X-Files movie, I want to Believe. The first thing I gotta say is wow… Mulder and Scully are officially a couple! No there is not sex scene in the movie but they were in bed together! I think by X-Files standards, that’s pretty exciting already.
In any case… I thought the movie was very disappointing. The whole thing about the X-Files is that “the truth is out there” storyline. Sure this movie’s is a story after the TV series, but it doesn’t really add anything new!
You know how the beginning of each season, you’d have some kind of closure for stuff that happened in the finale of the previous season. Then you’d have many many episodes when the story doesn’t really move you along the overall storyline. Then it’d become interesting again because the plot finally develops new twists…
Ok, so this movie is a lot more like one of those episodes that just didn’t add anything to finding the “truth” Mulder is after. So we know both Mulder and Scully are no longer with the FBI… Big deal… Are we any “closer” to the “truth” after seeing this movie? No, not at all… That’s why I feel a little cheated. The movie is more hype than anything else. It’s wrong that they stir up all the interest from old fans and not give us anything substantial!!!
The Dark Knight
July 26th, 2008

Just saw The Dark Knight tonight. I like it for the most part but I gotta tell you that more than half way through the movie I thought it was getting too long… Not a good sign when you feel that way about a movie. I don’t know what really caused that though. In the end I still like the movie quite a bit. Maybe it’s because Maggie Gyllenhaal (who plays Rachel Dawes) just isn’t quite as pretty as Katie Holmes.
I also didn’t know how Joker was depicted in this movie. It’s obviously different from Jack Nicholson play Joker. I thought he wasn’t creepy enough…
Next up, The X-Files movie!!!
Hancock and more to come
July 5th, 2008

I went to see Hancock today. Not bad. Got many funny moments in there. There are so many movies I wanna see now and coming up. Wall-e, The Dark Knight, The X-Files movie, Red Cliff (赤壁), and maybe Mama Mia and The Happening, too! I guess it’s good to be in Singapore (better than Shanghai) when you wanna go see so many movies, huh?
Movie Review: Sex and The City
June 1st, 2008
(Do not read if you haven’t seen the movie and do want to know the plot.)

Before going to see this movie I heard that it got bad reviews in the press. But whatever… that usually doesn’t prevent me from going to movies I wanna see. Although just this week I was disappointed once already by Indiana Jones. Anyway, I was looking forward to seeing this so I went.
I thought the movie showed a lot of believable human emotions — in part because of the story and in part because of the good acting job. I was especially moved by the scene when Carrie left the library and ran into Mr. Big on the street, instead of kiss and make up, she hit him with the flowers in her hand and with a lot of rage. It was interesting that she yelled out “You humiliated me” instead of something like “How could you do this to me?” or “You hurt me.” Perhaps the writers were hinting something about Carrie’s character. That being humiliated was somehow more devastating to her than anything else.
Anyway, in general I thought the movie was good. The story moved quickly and was generally very engaging. But of course, I was also upset by the big happy ending when all was said and done. That was the one thing I didn’t like Hollywood movies! I like my movies to be realistic unless it’s clearly a Sci-Fi or fantasy movie. In life we don’t often get happy endings like in the movie. That in the end Carrie and Mr. Big still got married just ruined the movie for me.
Oh well…
